Honouring Widows Through Alms Housing
The care of widows is not merely a charitable idea; it is a biblical responsibility of the people of God. Scripture repeatedly commands His people to protect and honor widows. Paul tells us, "Honor widows who are widows indeed (1 Tim 5:3 LSB), while James describes caring for widows as "Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father" (James 1:27). As a Christian church in Canada, we recognize that families have responsibilities toward widowed relatives (1 Tim 5:3-8), and that government programs provide important assistance. Yet these provisions do not remove the church's responsibility to care for members of its own faith.
Alms Housing provides one practical way for the local church to obey this biblical command. Our aim is to provide, find and secure safe, modest, and affordable housing for widows, both short-term and long-term, according to their circumstances and needs. To do this, we are seeking opportunities to partner with churches, landlords, property owners, and existing housing providers, as well as suitable land for small or mini-homes. This is not about treating widows as charity cases, but about honor, dignity, and Christian family. A Church should be a place where those who have faithfully walked with Christ are not forgotten when their circumstances change.
Alms housing is one tangible way we can bear one another's burden and demonstrate the love of Christ to others. If you would like to learn more, donate, provide housing, land, or volunteer, we would love to hear from you. Please contact us using the form provided.
